 | Parametric objects now available at Canam
Introduction
The arrival of building information modeling (BIM) technology in the construction industry has created direct ties between building designers and construction teams. The coordination, feasibility and profitability of construction projects have all improved as a result of this technology.
BIM is becoming increasingly popular among engineering consultants and architects on complex and large-scale projects such as government buildings. This is why BIM requirements are becoming more common in ITT (invitation to tender) documents.
The use of parametric objects is now a requirement in such projects. These "intelligent" objects, which feature their own distinct parameters, allow for adjustments in real time whenever changes are made.
In accordance with its goal to remain on the leading-edge of the digital revolution in the construction industry, Canam is pleased to present its first series of parametric models for purlins and girts in Revit.
Definition of parametrics
The term parametrics designates the relationships between the different elements of a building information model that allow for the coordination and management of changes. These relationships are automatically created by the software or the user at the same time the model is being generated.
In the field of building design, the values or characteristics that define these types of relationships are called parameters. The software therefore acts to adjust and standardize these parameters as needed.
Advantages
Software features include the usual benefits of enhanced coordination and productivity. In addition, the modeling platform verifies the coherence of the entire project whenever changes are made.
The use of parametric objects therefore allows for the automatic coordination of modifications, regardless of where they are made: in model views, drawings, nomenclatures, cuts or plans.
Canam purlins and girts
Canam's line of C and Z cold-formed purlin and girt sections (figures 1 and 2) are now available for use in Revit in the following formats:
- metric and imperial
- 3D
- 2D partial view
- 2D side view
- 2D top view

Figures 1 and 2
Once the section has been created with its unique label depicting its properties, the subsequent behavior of the section is dynamic, which means:
- If the section is created at the intersection of a given level and axis, the section will adjust accordingly if the level is modified (figure 3).
- If the section is created at the intersection of a given axis and attached to a support and the axis or support is modified, the attached extremity of the section will adjust in compliance with the new axis and the length of the section will be changed automatically
(figure 3).
