Honourable Mention for September 2006 goes to BPR-Triax

Honourable Mention is conferred by Canam to a consulting engineering firm that has resolved a complex problem at the building design stage, particularly if that firm utilized the expertise of Canam in order to make optimum use of its products and/or solutions. Other factors taken into consideration include adherence to the construction budget, alternative solutions that generate major savings, easier installation and simplified project coordination.

The athletic facility houses a 50-metre Olympic-size pool for high-level swim meets, a public pool and a gymnasium. Because of their design flexibility and the savings generated from using open-web products, Canam joists and joist girders were specified at the design stage of this construction project. Discussions between BPR-Triax and Canam centered around the convergence of the top chords of the joists and joist girders.

The main challenge was to design joists with a geometry that would allow spectators to have a clear view from any of the seats. This project also required joist girders of varying depths to ensure the drainage of water covering a length of up to 36.5 m (120 ft.) and a depth of up to 2.9 m (9.5 ft.). The girders were shipped from the Canam St. Gédéon plant in two sections, with the splice connections bolted on the job site.

Congratulations to the entire BPR-Triax team who distinguished themselves at the design stage of this project.
