In this article:

The specific conditions for connecting to a joist girder or a joist do not necessarily limit the use of these products in a building.

Sometimes, the standard connection of butt ends that consists of a bearing point does not meet the need. Client-specific connection details can be acceptable based on the loads and geometries that suit their project.

Below are a few examples:

Connection using a joist girder base on the column

The detail below depicts the connection of a joist girder to a perimeter column. This system allows for concentric connections.

Connection using a joist girder base facing the column
Depending on the balance between the gravity loads on the joist girder and the bracing loads, the column could alternately extend up to the level of the upper part of the perimeter beams.

Transverse plate connection

The following illustrations show a connection of a perimeter joist girder to a tubular column. This system ensures the continuity of joist girder axial loads on the bracing.

Connection of a beam in a joist girder
To carry out the connection of a beam to a joist girder, a cut in the web of the beam can allow the beam to sit on a joist girder or to be connected to the web of the joist girder. Several other connections are possible in this situation.

Connection of a joist girder to a joist (or beam)
Connecting a joist girder to a joist can be accomplished with a "W" section or a plate inserted as a web member on the joist. This connection also applies to connections of a joist to a joist girder, or of one joist to another.

Conclusion
Regardless of the joist girder or joist connection, Canam Canada has the expertise to provide you with a cost-effective solution. Feel free to contact our experts.

Finally, standard connection details can be downloaded in PDF or DWG format at the Documentation Center on the Canam Canada website.
