 | Using welding washers with steel deck
Although no building in Canada has ever failed under seismic forces, the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) records and locates an average of 1,500 earthquakes in Canada per year. In order to improve the research and development aspect of designing seismic-resistant steel structures, the GSC provides regional earthquake risk maps to the National Building Code of Canada. According to these maps, all the provinces are at risk, but the province of Manitoba is considered to be the least likely to have an earthquake.
Canadian steel construction engineers are also interested in the development of seismic-resistant steel structures. Canam Group recently collaborated on testing carried out on steel deck diaphragms attached to steel supports by using welding washers and other attachment systems. The purpose was to examine the possibility of creating a fuse in the steel deck to limit the development of forces due to seismic activity. This testing was closely monitored by the Canadian Sheet Steel Building Institute, which issued the following position paper last August.
