 | From the slide rule to interactive tools on the Internet
The emergence of the Internet has led to dramatic changes in our day-to-day lives. Electronic communications are now well entrenched in the field of engineering. Certain senior engineering colleagues informed me that when their careers began, the principal tools available to them were the slide rule and a book called Smoley’s Four Combined Tables. Today, you can simply go to the Canam web site and, at the click of a button, have interactive joist calculation tools at your disposal, free of charge.
In the fall of 2003, the first Internet tool was added to our web site, allowing users to select the economical depth of joists. To date, more than 800 users have requested access to this tool, proving that there was a need to be met.
Recently, we developed a new interactive tool that allows users to calculate joist inertia for specific applications, for example the use of joists in a rigid frame and the resistance of floors to vibration. This tool will soon be available on our web site.
Other tools are currently being developed for selecting roof and floor decks and joist girders. We will have more details for you in our next issue of Canam Info-Tech, or visit our web site (www.canam.ws) to take advantage of these tools as soon as they come on line.
