 | Canam paint application methods
Canam Canada’s three Canadian plants utilize various methods and equipment for painting joists. This article provides consultants with specific information regarding the types of standard paint available for a given project.
The CISC commentary on Article 16.9 of CAN/CSA S16-01 states:
“Interiors of buildings conditioned for human comfort are generally assumed to be of a non-corrosive environment and therefore do not require corrosion protection.
Joists normally receive one coat of paint suitable for a production line application. This paint is generally adequate for three months of exposure, which should be ample time to enclose, or paint, the joists.
Special coatings, and paints with special preparations, are expensive because they have to be applied individually to each joist by spraying or other means.”
All Canam plants are equipped with tanks for dipping bundles of joists in paint (see Figure 1) according to CISC/CPMA Standard 1-73a, A Quick-Drying One-Coat Paint for Use on Structural Steel, or CISC/CPMA Standard 2-75, A Quick-Drying Primer for Use on Structural Steel. The sizes of the various tanks and the paint (primer) colours available in each plant are indicated below.
St. Gédéon, QC
The St. Gédéon plant serves the Atlantic Provinces, New England, Quebec and the Ontario region east of Kingston.
Grey paint: three tanks of different sizes
- Tank No. 1: 56’-0’’ (length) x 48” (height*) x 66’’ (width)
- Tank No. 2: 61’-0’’ (length) x 52’’ (height*) x 68’’ (width)
- Tank No. 3: 103’-0’’ (length) x 71’’ (height*) x 70’’ (width)
Red paint: Please note that beginning in October 2008, red paint will only be applied by spray gun at the Canam plant in St. Gédéon de Beauce. The dipping method will no longer be available. Consult the table in figure 3 for the cost impact of spray gun application.
Mississauga, ON
The Mississauga plant serves the Ontario region from Kingston west to Thunder Bay.
Grey paint: two tanks of the same size
- 84’-0’’ (length) x 72’’ (height*) x 36’’ (width)
Red paint: no longer available at the Mississauga plant

Figure 1
Calgary, AB
The Calgary plant serves the regions of the North West Territories, Yukon, Nunavut, Ontario from Thunder Bay westward, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia.
Grey paint: one single tank
- 84’-0’’ (length) x 72’’ (height*) x 36’’ (width)
Red paint: no longer available at the Calgary plant
*Please note that the tank height, as specified in every case, corresponds to the “effective” depth of paint in that particular tank.
In some cases, the paint can be applied by dipping, even when the dimensions of the joists exceed those of our tanks. For example, with special handling, it is possible to dip a joist that is deeper than the effective depth of the paint in the tank.
Whenever the joist dimensions exceed the maximum tank dimensions specified above, please contact a Canam representative for the painting method best suited to the dimensions of the joists.
Spray paints
Spray painting may be necessary when the joist measurements exceed the tank dimensions and is necessary when special paints are required, resulting in higher costs than dipping (see Figure 2). Only the St. Gédéon plant is equipped to apply paint by spraying. The following table, on page 29 of Canam's Joist Catalogue, shows that spray painting, for certain types of paint (e.g., CISC/CPMA 1-73a, 2-75), can be significantly more expensive than dipping.

Since the Calgary and Mississauga plants are not equipped for spray painting, the extra charge for subcontracting out may vary from one contractor to the next and according to the complexity of the project. Please contact a Canam representative for schedules and additional charges for painting.
