A joist and steel deck manufacturer’s milestones

2009
Canam Canada concludes an agreement with Metal Dek Group®, a business unit of Consolidated Systems Inc. (CSi®) of Columbia, South Carolina, for the exclusive distribution in Canada of its architectural and structural metal deck known as Versa-Dek® and Deep-Dek®.

Canam Canada is honoured with two CISC-Quebec Steel Design Awards: one for the project to expand the Legendre bus garage and build a new body shop for the Société de transport de Montréal in Montreal, Quebec, which wins in the “Green Buildings” category, and the other for the Lebourgneuf Complex project in Quebec City, Quebec, which earns Honourable Mention in the “Commercial/Institutional Projects” category.

2008
Canam Canada is honoured with a CISC-Quebec Steel Design Award for the Jean Lesage International Airport expansion project in Quebec City, Quebec, which wins in the “Commercial/Institutional Projects” category.

Canam Canada is honoured with a CISC-Quebec Steel Design Award for the Résidence Alfredo-Gagliardi project in Montreal, Quebec, which wins in the “Residential Projects/Renovations” category.

Canam Canada is honoured with a CISC-Quebec Steel Design Award for the Pavillon d’Espace 400e project in Quebec City, Quebec, which wins in the “Jurors’ Favourite” category. Also worthy of mention are the four Canam Canada projects named as finalists in their respective categories: the Carrefour national de l'aquaculture et des pêches interpretation center in Grande Rivière, the Alphonse-Desjardins Sports Complex in Trois Rivières, the Saputo Stadium in Montreal and Haverstraw Marina in the State of New York.

2007
Canam Canada is honoured with a CISC-Quebec Steel Design Award for the CGC Shed project in Montreal, Quebec, which wins in the “Jurors’ Favourite” category.

Canam Canada is honoured with a CISC-Quebec Steel Design Award for the expansion and redevelopment project on the campus of the École de technologie supérieure (ÉTS) in Montreal, Quebec, which earns Honourable Mention in the “Commercial/Institutional Projects” category.

Canam Canada delivers the longest roof joists in its history, each measuring 253 feet (77.1 m) in length. These complex pieces are to be used in the construction of the Alphonse-Desjardins Sports Complex for the Chemin-du-Roy School Board in Trois Rivières, Quebec. Canam Canada’s previous record for joist length is 168 feet (51.2 m).

Canam Group becomes a member of the Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC), a non-profit organization created in 2002 to accelerate the design and construction of green buildings across Canada.

2006
The Canam Canada website is launched. One section of the site features six interactive engineering tools developed by Canam Canada's engineering team to assist design engineers in the selection of Canam construction products.

2005
The company name is changed from The Canam Manac Group Inc. to Canam Group Inc. following the major restructuring announced in 2004.

Canam Canada is honoured with a CISC-Quebec Steel Design Award for the 740 Bel-Air project in Montreal, Quebec, which wins in the "Green Buildings" category.

2004
The Canam Manac Group adopts a new strategic plan aimed at restructuring its operations into nine business units in the construction products sector. Canam Steel is divided into two business units: Canam – Joists and Steel Deck (Canada) and Canam – Solutions + Service (United States).

Canam Canada is honoured with two CISC-Quebec Steel Design Awards: one for Phase 1 of the Montréal-Trudeau International Airport expansion project in Montreal, Quebec, which wins in the “Commercial/Institutional Projects” category, and the other for the Mountain Equipment Coop project in Montreal, Quebec, which earns Honourable Mention in the “Green Buildings” category.

2003
The Lafayette, IN plant ceases to operate in February so that Canam can serve the American Midwest steel joist market more efficiently. From now on, production is to be concentrated in the Columbus, OH and Washington, MO plants.

Canam produces a portion of the components required for the construction of the Niagara Falls Casino in Ontario, Hymus Spec in Dorval, Quebec, and the CARI Aquatic/Arena Complex in Charlottetown, P.E.I.

Canam is honoured with two CISC-Quebec Steel Design Awards, one for the Palais des Congrès de Montréal expansion project in Montreal, Quebec, which wins in the “Commercial/Institutional Projects” category, and the other for the "Rendez-vous à la rivière" walkway project in St. Georges, Quebec, which earns Honourable Mention in the “Industrial Projects/Bridges” category.

2002
Canam produces a portion of the components required for the construction of the Cité du cinéma Studio Technoparc in Montreal, Quebec, the Home Depot store in Boisbriand, Quebec, and the IKEA store in Boucherville, Quebec.

Four of the six projects that receive 2002 Design Awards from the Steel Joist Institute (SJI) have been built utilizing joists fabricated by two Canam plants in the U.S.

2001
The Mississauga, ON plant receives SJI (Steel Joist Institute) certification.

The mission of the Canam plant in Laval, Quebec, is changed: the plant is now dedicated solely to the fabrication of structural steel so that it can fulfill current contracts for projects in the U.S. and Canada by 2002. In March, a project is launched to expand the Laval plant by 18,000 square feet to make room for a new paint shop.

Canam produces a portion of the components required for the construction of Timberstrand LSL Plant #3 in Kenora, Ontario, the TransAlta Rainforest Building at the Calgary Zoo in Calgary, Alberta, and Toronto Pearson International Airport in Toronto, Ontario.

Canam is honoured with a CISC-Quebec Steel Design Award for the Le Nordais Wind Farm project in Matane and Cap Chat, Quebec, which wins in the “Industrial Projects/Bridges” category.

2000
The St. Gédéon de Beauce, QC and Calgary, AB plants receive SJI (Steel Joist Institute) certification. The Boucherville, QC plant receives CWB (Canadian Welding Bureau) Division 2.1 certification.

The Canam Manac Group wins several contracts for high-profile projects, including the Patriots Stadium (CMGI Field) in Foxboro, Massachusetts, the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center in Boston, Massachusetts, and Montréal-Trudeau International Airport in Montreal, Quebec.

Canam produces a portion of the components required for the construction of an atrium and office building in Nepean, Ontario, and the Mitchell-Lincoln packaging plant in Drummondville, Quebec.

1999
The Boucherville, QC plant receives ISO 9001:2000 certification.

1998
The St. Gédéon de Beauce, QC plant receives ISO 9001:2000 certification.

1997
The Calgary, AB plant receives CWB (Canadian Welding Bureau) Division 1 certification.

The Canam Manac Group acquires the assets of Marshall Steel Limited, a firm located in Laval, Quebec, specialized mainly in the processing and resale of cut-to-length beams intended for the structural steel fabrication market.

Canam is honoured with a CISC-Quebec 1996-1997 Steel Design Award for the ICAO Headquarters project in Montreal Quebec.

1996
The St. Gédéon de Beauce, QC plant receives AISC (American Institute of Steel Construction) certification.

The Canam Manac Group acquires certain assets of Lightsteel Industries Inc., a subsidiary of Togeco Group in Boucherville, Quebec, specialized in the fabrication of steel sections intended for the construction and manufacturing industries.

The Canam Manac Group acquires a plant in Calgary, Alberta.

1995
The Canam Manac Group acquires a new building for the purpose of turning it into a plant to produce structural steel components in Jacksonville, Florida.

1993
Canam participates in the fabrication and installation of structural steel components for the Fleet Center in Boston.

1991
The St. Gédéon de Beauce, QC plant receives CWB (Canadian Welding Bureau) Division 1 certification.

Canam produces a portion of the components required for the construction of 1000 de la Gauchetière, a 52-storey building in Montreal, Quebec.

A project is launched to modernize and expand the St. Gédéon de Beauce, QC plant.

1986
Canam wins an award in the "Fabrication" category in the Mercuriades competition organized by the FCCQ.

1984
The Mississauga, ON plant receives CWB (Canadian Welding Bureau) Division 2.1 certification.

1983
A steel joist plant is established in Mississauga, Ontario.

1976
The Canam Manac Group acquires the Boston-based Canam Sales Corporation, specialized in steel joist fabrication.

1974
A steel deck plant is built in Boucherville, Quebec.

1960
Canam Steel Works is founded in St. Gédéon de Beauce, Quebec, to fabricate steel joists. On May 5, 1961, production starts up at the 12,000-square-foot (1115 m2) plant.

The St. Gédéon de Beauce, QC plant receives CWB (Canadian Welding Bureau) Division 2.1 certification.
